“Creativity is Abnormal”

That is my new saying. It’s as true as “Bald people don’t get bedhead.” It can never go wrong. Creativity is abnormal. Who ever heard of a normal creative idea? The essence of creativity is abnormality. When you think outside the box, it’s abnormal. I’m not saying that whoever is creative is abnormal. Well, actually, I am. No one is normal, so the norm is abnormality. Everyone has got to be unique in this convoluted world of ours, but nobody accepts someone “different”. It’s as twisted as a Twizzler that got its bottom end stuck to a blender and its top glued to the ceiling. And then people do something normal to break the mold. “Be unique, get a Macbook!” Be unique, though all Macs are the same color, shape and size. Have you ever seen a Mac without that Aurora Borealis wallpaper? Sure, it’s a great machine, but on the Different Scale, it’s a zero. Just get a PC! No two are the same.

But we’re supposed to be talking about people and creativity. Creativity is abnormality. Kids are praised for their creativity in drawing a small house with three or four people outside. But the kid who draws a mutant doggy with fire coming out of its ears and a small pocket for hamburgers on the go? He’s shunned for life, and the rest of art class, except by other kids of his kind. Eventually, he’ll grow up (yeah, he will!) and become a fantasy writer or engineer or some such other visionary. He’ll be famous, while all his boring classmates become accountants or other such brain-smelting “professionals”. Stinks for them. Be abnormal as you want; it’s the normal thing to do!

Great post! Speaking as a person who long ago was the kid drawing the fire breathing dogs, I agree with your point.

I just learned of your blog today, and am working my through them. I am very impressed.

I am not sure that I will show this one to the accountant that lives in my house, though. (I’m sure your dad could give you some examples of creative accounting. 🙂

    Sent from my MacBook.

    • Oh, thanks Uncle Paul! I’m glad you found me! I blog about a lot of stuff, whatever I think of, whatever I read, and a lot of other extraneous matter. Thanks for reading!

  3. I am Fishy, and I approve of this post. I think the difference between so called normal people and ‘weird’ people is that us weirdos are willing to let our creativity shine through.

…Hey! I have a Mac without that wallpaper! (It’s currently some nebula. I forget what it’s called, but I’ve been thinking of changing it back to the Hubble ultra deep field anyways)

  4. What exactly defines “normal”?
